Conservation of Energy Implies Conservation of Momentum: How We Can Explain Conservation of Momentum to Before-Calculus Students

چکیده
In solving physics problems, it is often important to use the laws of conservation of energy and momentum. While most people have intuitive understanding of energy and of its conservation, there is usually no intuition behind momentum, and known textbook derivations of conservation of momentum use calculus – which is usually taught after momentum. In this paper, we show how the law of conservation of momentum can be explained to before-calculus student: by using the fact that this law can be derived from the more intuitive conservation of energy if we consider energy in different coordinate systems. c ⃝2014 World Academic Press, UK. One of the ways, to control of the drag forces applying to the circular cylinder in the air flow, is control of the generated boundary layer around the cylinder, and one of the new and effective ways for control of the boundary layer, is using high voltage electrostatic field in fluid flow. In these conditions, because of the coupled relations between electric field and momentum equations, th...
متن کاملOn the Trace Anomaly and the Energy-Momentum Conservation of Quantum Fields at D=2 in Classical Curved Backgrounds
We study the conformal symmetry and the energy-momentum conservation of scalar field interacting with a curved background at D = 2. We avoid to incorporate the metric determinant into the measure of the scalar field to explain the conformal anomaly and the consequent energy-momentum conservation. Contrarily, we split the scalar field in two other fields, in such a way that just one of them can ...

By a conservation law we mean a quantity constructed from the coordinates, velocities, accelerations, etc. of the system that does not change as the system evolves in time. When the equations of motion are second order, conservation laws typically arise as functions on the velocity phase (possibly with explicit time dependence). Conservation of energy, momentum and angular momentum are familiar...

A two-dimensional, unsteady, isothermal and two-phase flow of reactant-product mixture in the air-side electrode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) is studied numerically in the present study. The mixture is composed of oxygen, nitrogen, liquid water and water vapor. The governing equations are two species conservation, a single momentum equation for mobile mixture, liquid mass cons...
متن کاملOn Dual Configurational Forces
The dual conservation laws of elasticity are systematically re-examined by using both Noether’s variational approach and Coleman–Noll–Gurtin’s thermodynamics approach. These dual conservation laws can be interpreted as the dual configurational force, and therefore they provide the dual energy–momentum tensor. Some previously unknown and yet interesting results in elasticity theory have been dis...
